For most of my life, I have kept a pretty tight circle of friends and family. I would consider myself to be a fairly shy person until you get to know me. It just takes me a little while to warm up to someone. I think part of this slow build up is due to the mental checklist of what I look for in a friend that I go through when meeting someone new.
I have many different circles of people I spend time with. In high school, there was a group from each sports team, then I had my friends from outside of my high school and of course my long-time friends. Now, in college, I have my group of friends from Chi O, friends I lived with, friends from freshman year and people I have met through intramurals, work and other organizations. But, at the end of the day I can count on two hands the people I really trust that I can be my true self around and share important life moments with.
For those of you who may be extended family or outside of some of my circles, here are ten things that you do not know about me.
When I was two years old, I had surgery on both thumbs because neither would bend past a certain point. The doctors cut a tendon in each thumb, and you can still see where my thumb was stitched up to this day.
In 2004, I competed in the NC Watermelon Festival pageant. I guess no one taught me how to wave to the crowd because I embarrassed myself. Somehow I still pulled out Second Runner-Up.
I took dance for nine years. This surprises a lot of people because of my love of sports and my lack of grace when it comes to movement. But, I started out in dance first. I took tap, ballet and jazz, then eventually gave it up to pursue club sports.
I absolutely hate hot dogs. I know hate is a strong word, but if there is one thing in this world that I will never eat again, it is a hot dog. I scarred myself as a child by eating them straight from the package. Then, I saw the infamous video about how they are made. Never again.
When I was in fourth grade, my school held a Fall Festival where I won a parakeet by playing Deal or No Deal. One ticket and I won a live bird. His name was Carolina of course, due to is Carolina blue feathers. Eventually we moved, and my parents gave away Carolina while I was away at summer camp. Harsh.
I would not say I am musically inclined, but as an elementary student, I performed as a lead character in a play called "Groovy!" and as a background cheerleader in a production of "High School Musical."
In ninth grade, I broke my best friend's nose as we were warming up for a softball game. While she was waiting to throw with her partner, she joined my partner and me. Next thing I know, her partner is back and the ball has already left my hands and is headed right for the middle of her face. Luckily, she is still my friend.
I never forget a face. This is both a gift and a curse. I am the person that will immediately recognize an actor and can give you their IMDb. This trait also leads to some uncomfortable moments. I always remember when I have met someone, maybe not their name, but I know whether or not we have ever interacted. I must have a forgettable face because it is very awkward when that person does not remember me.
Every night to fall asleep, I have to listen to a show. Just something mindless like "Parks and Rec" or "The Office." I just need something to take my mind off the school work, my job or my future long enough to shut my eyes. My roommates have not been too happy about this.
Finally, my biggest pet peeve is when people are late. I live on a schedule so I can make the most of my time. To me, being late for our plans is the most inconsiderate thing a person can do. My friends will tell you that I will call them out. It can completely change my mood when I have to sit around waiting on someone.
